It is also assumed that his middle name was Stafford, but there is no proof. James served three times in the War of 1812 for a few months each time, one of them being for someone else. In 1851 he was in Salisbury NC and applied for a land grant based on his service. He died four days later. Not known where he is buried and have no exact record of his death except for statements later.

Ten years before the Civil War, James' nephew, James Pleasant Doyle, moved his wife and 6 kids from TN to KS to get a fresh start and leave the conflict of the South and a few months later John Brown decided to make an example of the slaveowners in KS and that fateful night started with the house of James Doyle, and killed the father and two oldest sons, William (22) and Drury (20). They were never slaveowners. The 17 year old son, John C. Doyle buried the father and brothers and packed the family and moved back to TN where he did fight for the south and is buried with honors in Knoxville. He was married to Sarah Sally Raper on 5 Nov 1805 in Knox TN. It is believed that there was a set of twins born to this family. It is thought to be Isaac and Jacob.

54. Sarah Sally RAPER was born on 15 Feb 1789 in Guilford Co. NC. She died on 16 Oct 1872 in Strawberry, Lawrence AK. was in Knoxville with her son James and his wife Prudy at the time of her husbands death. James and Prudy had just lost a one month old girl and it was near the end of 1851. The gold rush was still news in CA and Sarah at age 62 got her son James, Prudy and their children on a wagon train headed for CA. It bogged down due west in Lawrence Co. AK, due to winter and illness.

In the spring, it went on, and the Doyles stayed. That established the Doyles in Strawberry, Lawrence Co. AK. Old John had 7 children, and son James and Sarah had 7 and only James and Prudy moved to AK. that leaves quite a group begatting in the TN area.

Some of the boys had gone to GA to work on the railroad and into FL and AL. Although some made it into local politics, most were hard working farmers and some who went to AL, got into coal mining etc. They were not noted for being a monied crowd.

The men were all in the major conflicts and wars and in the Civil War most were on the side of the south, even though they were not known to be slave owners.

Sarah Raper's family was quite well to do in England and high in the Church of England as well as lawyers and local politics. Sarah's grandfather immigrated to NC about 1750 when her father Jacob was a tot. Jacob later moved to TN before it was a state and therefor qualifies as First Families of Tennessee.

Raper, in England, translate to Rope Maker....French was Rapier, or swordmaker.

Her grandfather William, born 1725, came to the Guilford Co. Highpoint area and started a church there as well as being an importer in the Revolutionary War, ran supplies with his boats.

Later, Sarah would sit i the Chimney corner smoking her corn cob pipe and tell tales of being a witch and flying in and out of keyholes and doing what witches do. She is buried in the Ward Cemetery, just outside Strawberry, Arkansas. She died at age 83. After she got to Arkansas, she re filed for the land grant her husband James was doing when he died. It took her 5 years, but she got it.

vii. Pleasant Doyle was born on 9 Feb 1827. Moved to Kansas in Oct 1855, in Franklin Co. arriving in Nov 1855.

In spring of 1856, after the crops were planted, on the night of May 24th, John Brown, with about 25 men, came to the house and demanded admittance. When Pleasant Doyle refused admittance, they set fire to the house with torches made of pararie grass. To keep everyone from being burned to death, Pleasant opened the door. They came in the house and handcuffed Pleasant Doyle and his two oldest sons and started to take John C. Doyle, the youngest son, but his mother begged then to leave him alone as he was the only protection she would have....Brown told her they were going to take Pleasant and the boys to the army, and left the house with them. They took them about 300 yards from the house and murdered them. Pleasant was shot in the head, and the boys cut to pieces. They left them all dead in a heap. They then went two miles further to Patawatma River and killed two more men by the names of Wilkerson and Sherman. After they had killed Pleasant and his sons, some of Brown's men came back to the house to get the horses, but failed to find them, because they were staked out on the prarie to graze. After daylight, the youngest son went to some neighbors house and got them to come and help bury his father and brothers. they then loaded up the wagon and moved to Case Co. MO.

There they remained until September, then moved back to Chattanooga, TN to live. In Nov 1859, when John Brown was hanged at Charleston WV, the young son of Pleasant Doyle had permission fromGovornor Wise to do the hanging, but failed to get there in time, because of a landslide between Morristown and Bristol. Brown stated that he murdered the Doyles on account of them being slave holders, but Pleasant Doyle had never owned a negro and had never quite expected to. They were murdered simply because they were from the south.
